Very good point Stevie. Some of the comments that have been said are valid and true, however how many "OLDER" Americans don't have a computer and rely on letter mail. Direct Mailers who get a break on postage generate all your "junk mail" so many people complain about. That fact is that they pay pennies on the dollar for bulk rate permits and saturate the mail stream with junk. Why not charge them the same as everyone else then that mail will either sputter out or put the necessary revenue in the system. One thing nobody has mentioned is the 26,000 mail carriers that will no longer be employed if 5 day delivery sets in. Not to mention the mail handlers and clerks who do the sorting. Let's talk about the 75 Billion the OIG found at the Postal Service. The Postal Service is mandated to pay current and future retiree health care costs up front and that puts a 7 Billion dollar hole in the operating cost up front. HR22 was only a temporary fix. The Postal rate commision and Board of Governers actually run the Postal Service and the Postmaster General gets his marching orders from them at Headquarters. Lets look at who is really running the service into the ground. The Postal Service is the "ONLY" agency that goes door to door in every town io America, No other servic e can do that period! If you also look at some of the packages that come to your door delivered by the Postal Srvice, they were dropped off at the Post Office by UPS under the "Parcel Select" program and the mail carrier scans and delivers it. HSN, QVC and Amazon are an example of that mailing. UPS just re- labeled it and as I said dropped it off at the P.O. There are SOOOOOmany things that the public doesn't know. The Postal Service is in a venture to automate the mail, in particular magazines or "flats" as they are called. Each sorting machine costs 17.5 Million and are supposed to cut sorting time in half or better and also eliminate jobs that are un-necessary. The fact is that there are only 5 up and running the entire country was the last word and there are supposed to be that many running in our city alone. Govt contractors can't get them going. A solid waste of untold millions of dollars in labor costs and set backs. I work for the "service" and can tell you first hand that those folks who say they don't need a day or two of mail delivery or don't check their mail are probably younger than say 25 years old (for example) and don't have a lot of assets so aren't worried about mail per se. Talk to someone over 35 (for example) and has a family and house, plans for retirement and has retirement goals and they will tell you that the mail and Postal Service is a viable and very good service. Talk to someone in Canada, Europe, Asia, or South America and see what they pay and get for their money.....
